Musée des Amériques, Auch

Closed for the winter

The second-largest pre-Columbian collection in France, in a town of twenty thousand, because a tailor from Auch went to Chile in 1879, came home with crates, and left the lot to the town when he died. The masterpiece is a Mass of Saint Gregory made in Mexico in 1539 — a picture built entirely out of feathers. It is pottery behind glass, though: a stop bolted onto a day in Auch rather than a destination for young children.
