Larressingle (town)

Year round

Two hundred-odd people live inside a complete 13th-century circuit of walls, moat and drawbridge — built not by a warlord but by the abbots of Condom as their own fortified residence, which is why the keep sits where a church normally would. Everyone calls it the smallest fortified village in France; the official line is one of the smallest, and the difference is the honest one. Fifteen minutes to walk, and more craft shops than houses.
