Château de Lavardens

Open daily

Seventeen rooms and seventeen different floors, each a separate geometric pattern laid in local brick and limestone, no two alike. Rebuilding began in the early 1600s and never finished — plague in 1653 drove two hundred workmen off the hill and the top storey was never built. It was nearly broken up as a stone quarry before being listed in 1961.
